About Mr. Ogden

Hello!  My name is Shane Ogden and I am so excited to be joining the family at the Meeteetse Schools.

Here is a brief introduction to who I am and where I have been.

I grew up in American Fork, Utah.  While in school I loved to play tennis, photography, and became an Eagle Scout.  I was very involved in the school yearbook and became the editor my Junior and Senior years.  During this time I had the opportunity of traveling to Chihuahua Mexico with my Scout group to build a medical clinic for some natives in the local mountains.  It was during this time that I realized that I really liked working with people and decided to pursue a medical degree.

I began my university studies soon after high school at Utah State University.  I found almost all of my courses very enjoyable except for the 7:30 am Math 106 (college algebra) course.  This course became my nemesis.

After two terms of school I decided to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I was called to serve in Dresden Germany for two years.  Dresden is in the Eastern portion of the country and I arrived there a year and a half after the Berlin Wall came down.  I had many wonderful experiences in working with people and teaching (they loved us to teach English classes at the universities).  I found out that I really didn't want to work on people's feet (Podiatrist), I wanted to teach.

When I returned from Germany I attended to Utah Valley State College (now UVU) to make up all those math credits that killed me.  I changed my major and returned to Utah State University where I majored in German teaching and Physical Education.  At the beginning of my Senior year I met with a girl I knew from American Fork.  We started dating and were married in January of our Senior year.  That may have been the hardest semester ever!

My first position was teaching German and coaching soccer and tennis at Burley High School in Burley, Idaho.  As many teachers have to do, I picked up side jobs and summer employment as the manager of the city's swimming pool.  I loved being with youth of all ages as I taught swim lessons and coached little league soccer and tennis.  We really thought that life was great.

As it came time for me to renew my teaching license for the second time I looked at where my continuing education was coming from.  I had so many credits from coaches clinics and athletic seminars that I decided I might as well get my Masters Degree so that I could become an Activities Director.  So that is what I did.

I began my Master's Degree in Administration from Jones International University out of Centennial Colorado.  I loved that I could take course late at night after teaching, coaching, and putting kids to bed.  I also enjoyed being in courses with teachers all over the globe.  I quickly learned that Idaho was a little slow in educational progress.  I loved learning about issued in education that I knew would hit Idaho in the next several years.

An assistant principal position opened up before the AD position did, so I applied and became the Assistant Principal at Burley High School.  One of my responsibilities was to oversee the transition from 9th grade being at the Junior High moving to the High School.  I had marvelous colleagues and mentors who helped me grow and mature more than I ever had during that year.  At the conclusion of that year, my principal and mentor encouraged me to apply for principal positions.  As a result I was hired as the Rawlins High School principal.

My first week on the job in Rawlins was the same week as the first report on "drop-out factories" and Rawlins was labeled as one.  Over the next 5 years it was my mission to increase graduation rates and to keep kids in school by providing for them hope for the future.  This was a wonderful, and windy, time in our families life.  I had the opportunity to serve on several state committee's and even present in Washington DC about rural education.  Opportunities for growth and experience continued for us when I was hired to be the Logan High School, Logan Utah, principal.

Logan brought a whole new level of education.  A school building with 1,750 students, 80 teachers, 100 support staff, and the design and construction of a new building.  I implemented a 1:1 program to all 1,750 students and again we increased our graduation rate.  As a result of my work in Logan I was named a finalist for the state principal of the year from the Utah Association of Secondary School Principals.  Working in a large setting helped me to realize that bigger is not always better.  As a family we decided it was time to find a place where we could really just settle in, enjoy a calmer pace of life, and grow as a family.

Here we are, we found just that place.  We are so grateful for the opportunity that we have to be here in Meeteetse.  As I start my 19th year in education I am hopeful that this will take me through the majority of my career.  I know that some people are always looking for a step up, or an advancement.  Having experienced those things already, my eyes have been opened.  I am no longer looking for the next thing, but as a family we want to kick our shoes off, and fish in the river.  (None of really know how to fish, so we are open for lessons!)
